9/20 Sunday School: Bible Bookshelf

 Hi everyone!

This year in Sunday School we are going to be learning more about this amazing book called the Bible.  We are going to be thinking of the Bible as a bookshelf or library rather than one book.  We learned this week that the Bible is actually 66 books inside one cover! This week we thought about some of the different kinds of books we like to read:

  • fiction
  • nonfiction
  • realistic fiction
  • history
  • biography
  • poetry or books of songs
  • picture books
  • graphic novels
  • science fiction and fantasy

Just like a library, the Bible has all different kinds of stories:

  • fiction (like the stories Jesus makes up to teach his friends something - we call these parables)
  • history (parts of the Old Testament tell the history of the Hebrew people, etc.)
  • science (the authors who wrote the books of the Bible sometimes used the tools they had - their eyes and the stories handed down to them - to try to understand nature and how the world got the way it is. We see this in the book of Genesis and a few other places.)
  • poetry and songs (the Psalms, and others)
  • I don't know of any graphic novels in the Bible, but children's Bibles are often picture books!
  • As for science fiction and fantasy, some scholars think the book called Revelation is like science fiction or fantasy because it describes a vision of the future.
As we learn more this year we will make our own Bible Bookshelf.  Each kind of book gets a different color.  We will start with the yellow books called the Torah or the books of the law.

Today we read the story of creation from Genesis 1, so you can print the shelves and books and for now cut out and stick Genesis on the top shelf!

See you next week to learn more about the books at the beginning of the Bible!
